CHALLAH COVER FOR SHABBAT
Shabbat is such a special holiday; we want to do everything we can to make it beautiful and pleasing. In Hebrew, this is called Hiddur Mitzvah — enhancing a mitzvah. Everything from tidying up your home to cooking a delicious meal to setting out a fresh bouquet of flowers makes Shabbat extraordinary. One way you can make Shabbat extra meaningful is to have your kiddos make their own challah covers. They can use fabric markers and design the challah cover however they like. Make sure they write their name and the year, too — you will surely cherish it (and use it!) for many years to come! If your kids only make ONE Shabbat craft, this is it!
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED:
-White napkin or handkerchief (20 x 20 inches is a good size)
-Fabric markers
-Shabbat stencils (I got mine from Benny’s Educational Toys) or cookie cutters
-Wording and Pictures for Shabbat Challah Cover - PDF
HERE’S WHAT YOU DO:
(1) Wash your handkerchief or napkin in cold water and dry it all the way. (2) Next, iron it so that it’s nice and smooth. (3) Use painters tape to tape each of the four edges of your handkerchief or napkin to your table (or to a big piece of flat cardboard if you need to protect your table). (4) Then, use your fabric markers to write your name on your challah cover; write the year and/or the Jewish year; and draw whatever design you like! Refer to the Wording and Pictures for Shabbat Challah Cover - PDF to get ideas. Once you’re done, you can use your new challah cover right away; and it will surely make your Shabbat extra special for many years to come!
