SALT PAINTED ISRAELI FLAG
Salt painting is truly a thrilling art technique, and your kids will LOVE making a Salt Painted Israeli Flag for Yom Ha’atzmaut! It’s super simple — just “draw” the Star of David and two stripes of the Israeli flag with glue onto cardstock; sprinkle table salt over the top; give the paper a gentle shake to get rid of the excess salt; and then dip your paintbrush in blue liquid watercolors and touch any of the glue/salt areas. Watch with delight as the watercolors quickly spread into the glue/salt areas — it looks like magic! What a fun way to celebrate Israel’s birthday!
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED:
-White cardstock paper
-Bin or baking dish
-Glue (standard liquid glue, like Elmer’s)
-Salt (just regular table salt)
-Liquid watercolors in blue
-Paintbrush
HERE’S WHAT YOU DO:
(1) Draw the Star of David and two stripes of the Israeli flag with the glue (see photo) on the cardstock. (2) Make sure the cardstock is in a bin or baking dish, and then sprinkle salt all over the paper. (3) Allow it to sit just for a couple of minutes and then gently dump the excess salt into the bin. (4) Now for the super fun part! Dab your paintbrush into a little bit of the liquid watercolors and then gently touch it to any section of the glue/salt — watch the paint magically spread into the glue/salt! (5) Repeat Step 4 as many times as needed to cover all the glue/salt with paint. (6) It will be fragile for a while, so let it dry for several hours. You’ll probably want to make another flag right away, too!
